Frequently Asked Questions

Please contact us here if you cannot find an answer to your question.

What is a care assessment?

A care assessment (also known as a needs assessment) is a conversation with a trained professional to understand your daily challenges, what support you might need, and how those needs impact your overall well-being.

How long does a care assessment take?

There are no set timescales, but assessments usually last at least an hour and usually closer to two. The duration can depend on the complexity of your needs.

What happens after the care assessment?

A professional recommendation will be provided to you within 7 days outlining your needs and the support which would benefit you. This professional recommendation can be used to ensure care companies do not take advantage of you at a vulnerable time in your life.

How often are care assessments reviewed?

At your request and once care is in place a review is able to be completed to ensure care is meeting your needs, especially if your circumstances change.

How can I prepare for my care assessment?

It's helpful to think about all the daily tasks you find difficult, even minor ones. You might want to keep a diary of your challenges for a week. Gather relevant information like your NHS number, GP details, and contact information for anyone who will be with you.

What kind of questions will be asked during an assessment?

Questions will cover your physical and mental health, mobility, personal care (e.g., washing, dressing, toileting), managing medication, preparing meals, household tasks, social activities, and any risks you face in your home.

Can I have someone with me during the assessment?

Yes, it's highly recommended to have a family member, friend, or independent advocate present to support you and ensure all your needs are communicated.

Should I be completely honest during the assessment?

Yes, it's crucial to be as open and honest as possible about your difficulties. Downplaying your situation could lead to an inaccurate assessment and less support than you need.

What if I need urgent care?

If you're struggling to cope or your care arrangements break down, you can ask for an urgent assessment. We aim to see all individuals within 10 working days.

What if I have dementia?

The assessment for someone with dementia will focus on how the symptoms affect daily life, the support currently received, and what care might be needed as needs increase.

What if I have fluctuating needs?

If your needs change frequently, the assessor may need to visit more than once to ensure all needs are properly assessed over time.
